March 17, 2009- Governor Sonny Perdue and the Agriculture Advisory Commission launched the sixth annual National Agriculture Awareness Week in Georgia to recognize the contributions to agriculture and agribusiness. A celebration held at the Georgia Freight Depot featured approximately 60 agriculture commodities and organizations throughout Georgia displaying food products and related information. Guests attending today’s event included state legislators, FFA, 4-H, Young Farmers, Commodity Queens and other agriculture related organizations.

“Georgia’s agricultural community is innovative and resilient,” said Governor Perdue. “They will emerge from this challenging time stronger and more focused on providing great products, running efficient operations and utilizing cutting-edge technologies to bring food to the tables of Georgians and consumers around the world.”

Governor Perdue also announced the 2009 winner of the Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Award for Agriculture – Terry Chandler, Still Water Farm, Danielsville. The award honors farmers for good stewardship of all aspects of the environment in their farming practices.

The district stewardship winners include: Billy Max James, Cohutta Farms, Ellijay; Tom Bradbury, Bradbury Farms, Montrose; Will Harris, White Oak Pastures, Bluffton; and Clayton Wayne McKinnon, McKinnon Farms, Douglas.

Executive Summary:

Governor Sonny Perdue wants to know the Georgia farmers who are doing the best they can to protect the environment on and around their farms. For the past four years, Governor Perdue has recognized those that are not only making a living from their lands, but also using the latest, innovative techniques to protect it for future generations.

Nominees are currently being sought for the Fourth Annual Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Award. Applications are available at www.agawareness.com and due by December 16.

“As I learned from my father growing up on a farm in middle Georgia, if you take care of the land, it will take care of you,” Governor Perdue said. “This award shows all Georgians the outstanding job farmers are doing to protect our environment and preserve our state's natural resources.”

Five district winners are selected for the award each year. This year, only district winners will be required to submit supporting documentation. Past district winners are eligible to apply.

Judges will visit each district winner’s farm. Based on their recommendation, Governor Perdue will announce the state winner at the Fifth annual Agricultural Awareness Week in Atlanta on March 17.
