Mr. Neal Baker was the first Assistant State Supervisor
of Agriculture Education for District II, Southeast Georgia, in
1938 at the age of 29. After graduating from the University of Georgia
in 1931, Mr. Baker had a variety of work experiences including Produce
Agent at the Atlanta State Farmers Market, Educational Advisor for
the C.C. Camp in Chula, and Principal in Worth County. In 1933 he
became Vocational Agriculture teacher and principal of Cadwell High
School in Laurens County. He served as supervisor
of apprentice teachers for the University of Georgia Agricultural
Education Department while at Cadwell High.
In 1950 Mr. Baker received a Masters
Degree from the University of Georgia. He was offered the position
of State Director of Vocational Education but declined the offer
so he could stay in Swainsboro as District II Supervisor. In 1973,
after thirty-five years in this position, Mr. Baker retired.
Mr. Baker's honors include the Honorary
American Farmer Degree, the Distinguished Faculty Award from the
UGA College of Agriculture, and the State of Georgia Faithful Service
Award from three governors. Mr. Baker was elected to three Scholastic
Honor Societies: Alpha Zeta, Kappa Delta Pi, and Phi Kappa Phi.
One of the greatest accomplishments of Mr. Baker was
the establishment of Lindsay Grace District FFA Camp on the Satilla
River. Since retiring he has remained active in church and civic
organizations. |
