James Neal Baker

Mr. Neal Baker was the first Assistant State Supervisor of Agriculture Education for District II, Southeast Georgia, in 1938 at the age of 29. After graduating from the University of Georgia in 1931, Mr. Baker had a variety of work experiences including Produce Agent at the Atlanta State Farmers Market, Educational Advisor for the C.C. Camp in Chula, and Principal in Worth County. In 1933 he became Vocational Agriculture teacher and principal of Cadwell High School in Laurens County. He served as supervisor of apprentice teachers for the University of Georgia Agricultural Education Department while at Cadwell High.

In 1950 Mr. Baker received a Masters Degree from the University of Georgia. He was offered the position of State Director of Vocational Education but declined the offer so he could stay in Swainsboro as District II Supervisor. In 1973, after thirty-five years in this position, Mr. Baker retired.

Mr. Baker's honors include the Honorary American Farmer Degree, the Distinguished Faculty Award from the UGA College of Agriculture, and the State of Georgia Faithful Service Award from three governors. Mr. Baker was elected to three Scholastic Honor Societies: Alpha Zeta, Kappa Delta Pi, and Phi Kappa Phi.

One of the greatest accomplishments of Mr. Baker was the establishment of Lindsay Grace District FFA Camp on the Satilla River. Since retiring he has remained active in church and civic organizations.
