Mr. Lenoris Earl Abrams, Sr., a native of Thomas
County, devoted many successful years to instruction in Vocational
Agriculture. He spent his 32 years in Agricultural Education in
Wilcox, Thomas and Mitchell counties.
Having grown up on
a farm, Mr. Abrams wanted farmers to know the latest techniques
in farming. He successfully conducted adult evening programs and
farm tours. He also taught classes on agricultural structures such
as pole barns and supervised their construction on the property
of class members.
Mr. Abrams attended Fort Valley State College
for three years before being drafted into the U.S. Army where he
served two years. He returned to Fort Valley and received his Bachelor
of Science in Agricultural Education. He received his Masters of Science in Agricultural Education
from Florida A & M University.
Mr. Abrams taught at Excelsior
High School in Rochelle from 1958 to 1967, at Magnolia High School
in Thomasville from 1967 to 1970, at Mitchell-Baker High School
in Camilla from 1970 to 1977, and at Central High School in Thomasville
from 1977 to 1989 when he retired.
Mr. Abrams served
as president of the Fort Valley State College Alumni Association
and as the Thomas County Adult Farmer Advisor. He was also involved
with the Thomasville Association of Retired Teachers and the Fort
Valley State Agriculture Alumni Association. He won a seat on the
Thomas County Commission where he served from 1986 to1992. He served
as president of the Georgia Association of Black Elected Officials.
Other affiliations include Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Kiwanis Club,
Board of Directors of the YMCA, Retired Men's Club of Thomasville,
the Thomasville Branch of NAACP, Deacon of Providence M.B. Church,
Sunday school teacher, BTU Director, Chairman of the Deacon Board,
Boy Scout Leader, and Board of Directors of Providence Plaza, a
senior living facility. |
